How to Think Clearly About Human Movement
Biomechanics is often taught as a technical subject: equations, diagrams, and models applied to human anatomy. While those tools are essential, many students discover that mastering them does not automatically lead to confident explanations of movement.
The Foundations section exists to address that gap.
Rather than focusing on methods or calculations, these articles focus on how biomechanists reason: how observations are interpreted, how assumptions shape conclusions, and why careful language matters when systems are complex and only partially observable.
This section is entirely free and intended to be read in sequence.
What the Foundations Section Is (and Is Not)
Foundations is:

How to Read These Articles
The five articles in Foundations are designed to build on one another. They are most effective when read in order.
You may find that:

- And several challenge assumptions you did not realise you were making.
That response is normal. Biomechanics often becomes clearer only after expectations are recalibrated.
